Exploring Hair Replacement Surgeries

There are a few different types of hair replacement surgeries for both men and women; however men make up the biggest majority of customers for hair replacement companies across the United States and around the world.
Flap surgery was one of the first hair replacement surgeries performed nearly 25 years ago and is still performed today on those men who have healthy hair growth on the sides and back of their head. While under general anesthetic, a section of a man’s bald scalp is removed and replaced by a section of a hair bearing scalp that has been lifted up on three sides and shifted over to the bald location. It is still attached at one end for the blood supply and it is sewn into place giving the scalp the opportunity to fill with new hair. This is a preferred method by numerous balding patients because it covers a large area in a relatively short time; however it could give an unnatural hair line in the front and will no longer cover the back of the scalp.
A scalp reduction surgery is performed when there are bald areas on the top and back of the head. The man is placed under local anesthesia and a section of the bald scalp is removed all the while the surgeon is loosening and pulling the skin around the area that has been removed until the sides are closely together. Then the surgeon closes the gap with stitches. The scalp reduction surgery is sometimes performed with the flap surgery to provide better hair coverage at the crown.
Tissue expansion surgery was first performed on burn patients who have lost a large amount of skin and now the technique is being used for hair replacement. A balloon like device is inserted underneath a section of hair growing scalp next to the bald area, then a saline solution is injected and over a matter of weeks the scan expands to cover it. The patient may look as if they have a large bump on their head and the remedy for that is wearing a hat.
Hair replacement costs for these procedures range from $2000 up to $5,000 with hospital costs adding extra to the bill.
